Skin Care Frequently Asked Questions

Skin care questions we commonly receive from our patients:

Why is sleep important for healthy skin?
Skin calls on its resources throughout the day to fight environmental factors that try to damage it. At night, skin uses the natural sleep cycle of the body to repair and renew itself. Researchers recommend at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep to achieve optimum recovery. Any less and skin may exhibit signs of premature aging such as dullness, dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging.

Is sun protection really important or is it just hype?
Sun protection is extremely important and should begin at a young age. UV rays are responsible for generating 90 percent of free radicals in the skin, which damage surface skin cells and lipids. This leads to premature skin aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, dullness, loss of firmness, and discoloration.

Does my diet affect my skin?
There is not any “hard science” to explain why diet affects skin, but many dermatologists believe that it does. For example, some people get pimples after eating chocolate. Some research suggests that diets high in unhealthy fats and refined or processed carbohydrates promote skin aging. Foods rich in antioxidants seem to have protective effects on the skin. These include beans, nuts, fatty fish, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries, and green leafy vegetables such as spinach.

What causes skin to age?
The sun and the environment are currently believed to be top causes of skin aging. Oxidation damage resulting from exposure affects skin collagen and elastin, impacting the smoothness and firmness of the skin, contributing to discoloration, and resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and other indications of skin aging.

What specifically causes dark spots and other uneven skin pigmentation?
Uneven pigmentation such as dark spots are caused by exposure to UVA rays of the sun. Exposure generates harmful free radicals that cause melanocytes in the skin to produce additional melanin as protection. An over-production of melanin results in a dark spot (sometimes called an age spot) or other area of uneven pigmentation on the skin.

Prep Skin FAQs

What are the skin tone benefits of vitamin C?
Vitamin C brightens skin, minimizing the appearance of skin discoloration so skin tone is more even.

Why are antioxidants important in skin care?
Antioxidants scavenge harmful free radicals produced by environmental exposure. By doing this, they help prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming on the skin. Using an antioxidant-rich face wash such as our Antioxidant Foaming Wash provides these powerful substances, helping to protect skin from damage and making skin softer and smoother with regular use.

What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outermost layer of skin. For thousands of years, people have been exfoliating to remove their oldest skin cells, revealing fresh, healthy, radiant skin. This practice traces back to the ancient Egyptians and can be performed either mechanically with an abrasive or chemically with products containing certain acids. Our Gentle Skin Exfoliating Cleanser contains two percent salicylic acid, the highest concentration available without a prescription.

Do all facial cleansers/washes dry out skin?
Definitely not! Some face washes and cleansers are designed to fight skin aging so they contain nourishing and moisturizing ingredients. Take our Creamy Botanical Face Wash, which features aloe vera to calm and moisturize skin and antioxidant vitamin E to heal and protect it.

What does skin toner do?
Skin toner cleanses skin and shrinks the appearance of pores so it is typically used on the face. As its name implies, our Refining & Exfoliating Toner also exfoliates the skin, removing dry, dead skin cells.

What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a technique the buffs away the outermost layer of skin. It is a mechanical form of exfoliation typically performed by a professional using rough grains and a high-speed instrument. Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin colors and types and does not cause scarring or any change to skin color. We offer a Skin Smoothing Microdermabrasion Crème to get the same results at home using aluminum oxide crystals and red sea algae extract.

Treat Skin FAQs

What is skin care serum?
Serum is a concentrated product designed to repair skin or address specific issues. Our Correct & Soothe Serum and Rejuvenating Retinol Serum fight both skin aging and acne while healing and protecting. Our Line Relaxing Serum contains neuropeptides that minimize lines and wrinkles on the skin. It is perfect for areas that cannot be treated with Botox® injections, and it can also be used to enhance the longevity of these injections.

Why do under-eye treatments contain antioxidants?
Antioxidants are particularly important for under-eye skin treatments because this skin is thin, fragile, and constantly moving, making it more vulnerable. Skin around the eyes is typically the first place we see signs of environmental and sun damage. “Crow’s feet,” fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles are several telltale indications. Try our Age Prevent & Repair Gel or Line Plumping Eye Gel to get rid of lines and darkness and use our Multitasking Eye Restore Cream if eye area puffiness, dark circles, and loss of firmness are your main issues.

What is an easy way to make wrinkles less noticeable?
Plumping skin is a popular way to reduce the prominence of wrinkles without injections or surgery. Our Injection-Free Instant Wrinkle Filler is a topical product that plumps skin, making wrinkles seem to disappear. The ingredient urea draws moisture to plump it, causing skin to become softer in the process. Vitamin B5 reduces the appearance of pores, making skin more attractive.

Can a non-prescription moisturizer really fight skin aging?
With so many moisturizers claiming to work miracles, there is good reason to be skeptical. However, we have discovered that skin moisturizer containing certain substances can protect against free radicals responsible for premature skin aging. PNF Synergy Complex is a potent blend of nourishing vitamins, medical-grade antioxidants that protect skin from oxygen and nitrogen free radicals, and peptides that increase collagen levels to firm skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Find it in our Age Prevent & Repair Moisturizer.

What can I use to revitalize my skin?
If the skin has become tired looking, try oxygen therapy. Better yet, use our Pure Oxygen Energy Mask and get the same benefits at home for less money. A single treatment makes skin firmer and younger looking. Skin cells are energized by the topical oxygen therapy, making skin look refreshed and feel revitalized. This product is the ideal follow-up to a light chemical peel and can be used every day.

If my skin is acne-prone should I avoid moisturizer?
Even acne-prone skin requires moisture for optimal skin health. Typical acne treatments rob skin of moisture, making hydration even more important. Use an oil-free moisturizer such as our Clear Skin Hydrating Moisturizer. This rebalances skin moisture levels without contributing to breakouts. It features 0.5 percent salicylic acid to fight pimples and botanical extracts to calm skin and improve its tone and texture. Our Zero Shine Mattifying Moisturizer is another skin hydrating treatment that will not clog pores. Apply either of these products under makeup to give skin the moisture it needs.

Is there a lip plumper that will reduce lines on my lips?
Sipping drinks, kissing, and pursing lips contribute to lip lines. Our lips are one of the first areas to display signs of aging. To address plumping lips for a more attractive appearance, try our Anti-Aging Lip Plumper. This product is clinically proven to reduce furrows and increase lip volume. It even enhances color and these results improve with ongoing use. Plus, this plumper does not contain cinnamon or pepper which can be irritating.

Protect Skin FAQs

What is the best way to protect my skin from environmental damage?
Sunscreen! Almost every expert agrees that the regular use of sunscreen can reduce or prevent skin aging caused by the sun. To keep skin healthy and beautiful, use our Perfect Finish SPF 30+ sunscreen every day. It protects the skin from UVA and UVB rays that cause sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancers. Unlike many other sunscreens, it has a matte finish that helps control skin oil production. This sunscreen is safe for sensitive or acne-prone skin and can even be used by people who have had procedures performed on their skin.

I already wear sunscreen every day. Is there anything else I should use to protect my skin?
We recommend skin mist containing vitamin C and peptides. When applied under sunscreen, our Vitamin C & Peptide Skin Mist increases skin protection. If used daily, it builds up vitamin C levels in the skin to provide better protection against sun damage. Red sea algae extract increases skin cell renewal, promotes the formation of collagen and provides serious hydration. Use this mist to set makeup or take advantage of the power of geranium extract to refresh the skin and mind.
